Carroll Assistance Center in Wheatland |
In 1967 the First Presbyterian Church in Wheatland, Iowa, started an outreach ministry to the community. Thelma Carroll, the instigator of this ministry, soon discovered the range and depth of human need is silent, and because it is silent, and because it is integrated and not ghettoed in particular areas, it is not blatantly apparent. The Carroll Assistance Center is a testament to her sensitivity and the Christian concern encouraged in many others by her example and tireless advocacy. It has become an outreach that exceeds its locality.
Today, the Carroll Assistance Center is a twice-a-week gathering place and resource for people in Cedar, Clinton, Jackson, Jones and Scott counties who need help or just want a cup of coffee and the fellowship of being with others. Over 100 people come to the center each Tuesday and Wednesday. The staff includes a paid, part-time director who receives emergency calls for assistance throughout the week. On Tuesdays from 6 to 7:30 pm and Wednesdays from 10 am to 4 pm the director is augmented by social workers and volunteers.
Assistance is provided in many ways:
Emergency Aid
Food
Fuel
Electricity
Rent
Medical Prescriptions
School Supplies
Community Action (every Wednesday)
County Nurse (First Wednesday of each month from 10 to 11:15 am)
Carroll Thrift Store
Like garage sales? Come to the Carroll Thrift Store during regular hours on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (closed at noon on the last Wednesday of each month). Featuring clothes, shoes, bedding, household items, toys, etc. Reasonable prices. Come check it out.

All assistance is confidential! Understanding and kindness abound, and personal pride and dignity are guarded. If staff at the Center cannot help, they find help and make the connections.
The Carroll Assistance Center is an ecumenical ministry of the St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Wheatland and area churches. The Center seeks to embody God's love in our suffering world, to join troubled people in adversity, and work for healing and wholeness in life. The Center is administered by the Community Needs Council. Seven members are local, two denominational. Everyone is welcome!
